Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
Revelation 4:11
*Though this can help anyone, it may be most helpful for young men and ladies. Please share this with them.
The children’s book author Dr. Seuss is not necessarily known for his deep works of fiction. In fact, you probably stopped reading Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and books like that before you were ten years old. But Dr. Seuss was a literary genius when it came to imparting advice in a way that was both entertaining and profound. In one of his books, Happy Birthday to You, Dr. Seuss describes the “Great Birthday Bird” that comes around to make your birthday great each year. He reasons that, if you didn’t have birthdays, you wouldn’t be you. Near the end of the book, he makes this statement “Today you are You! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!”
Amidst all the silly, made-up words and places in his book, Dr. Seuss strikes at the heart of the problem for many young people. They see all the stars who are made famous through media outlets like Hollywood movies, magazines, and social media. They might even have good intentions in watching certain pastors or Christian leaders, but their goal focuses on emulating someone else. While there is nothing wrong with admiring and desiring to mimic their admirable qualities, God did not design you to be that person. He designed you to be you. I won’t use specific names, but if God wanted you to be like – fill in the blank with the name of the person you would most want to be like – He would have created you as that person. But He didn’t want you to be that person, He wanted you to be – fill in your name – quirks and all. Yes, our lives should be a continuous process of improvement in every area because we can always make ourselves better, but that doesn’t mean that we should wish we were someone else. Do you realize that you were fearfully and wonderfully made by a Creator Who designed you according to the plan He has for your life? You may consider yourself nerdy or skinny, unintelligent or backward, but God did not make a mistake when He created you. God has equipped you with the perfect features and characteristics to accomplish His will for your life on this earth. You may desire to be like someone else, but that person is not equipped to fulfill God’s plans for you.
As Dr. Seuss said, “I am what I am! That’s a great thing to be!” You must stop trying to be someone else and just determine to be the best version of you. After all, you are an original.
